I can tell you right now that I did not get enough sleep. It was about midday, a scant four hours or so later, when my ears picked up raised voices. Or one voice, actually, but it was a very loud and angry one. In short order, I recognized it as belonging to Luis.

Thinking that perhaps there was some kind of danger, I slid off the bed. Although I was wearing only my boxers, I hurried out the door.

Luis’ voice was trailing out the front door by then. I gazed over the rail to ask what the hell was going on, when the dwarf popped up in the living room.

“Tekkin, what’s happening?” I cried out.

Tekkin swung around to face me. “Doby and Luis are going at it! Come on!”

“I’m in my boxers here!”

“So, put on a robe or something.” Tekkin shouted back. “Hurry up or you’re going to miss the fight!”

He disappeared a second later. I ran back into the room to grab the robe. It took me all of two minutes to reach the front door, and already, I could see a crowd gathering outside.

Quickly, I sidled up next to Tekkin and Victor and took in some of the new faces. Beside Francisco were two teenagers, one male, the other a very pretty female. Several yards away were about a dozen villagers in casual dress. Most were older women in their late thirties or early forties, but there were a couple of men as well, and a scattering of small children. I saw Madame Solaine standing anxiously within their number.

Next, I turned to the spectacle they were all watching. Within our wide circle, Doby and Luis were already sparring. Easily, the Valkyrie dodged and parried Luis’ haymakers. It was clear from her performance that she’d had some martial arts training. And Luis wasn’t holding back either, just because he was fighting a female. It looked as if he was really trying to kill her.

Doby caught Luis with a leg sweep that dropped him on his back and rose up a cloud of dust. The bigger man was nimble enough to scramble aside and avoid the Valkyrie’s follow-up lunge. Doby lashed a leg at him. Luis grunted as he absorbed the impact with his shoulder, and he returned his own blow that caught the Valkyrie on the side. Doby staggered back. This gave Luis the opportunity to close the distance and clamp his meat hooks around her middle. Violently, Doby started smashing an elbow into the side of Luis’ head like they do in Mixed Martial Arts.

I glanced over at Victor. “Aren’t you going to do anything?”

Victor shook his head. “Doby doesn’t need any help. She’s got this handled. Just watch and learn, man.”

I turned back toward the action. Luis tried to lift the Valkyrie over his head to slam her. That is, until he got a hard knee to the face that jarred him enough for him to lose his grip on her. She not only got loose, but she managed to double Luis over and started pummeling his stomach with knee strikes.
